Make no mistake about it, I am a big fan of Benchmade Knives. The Barrage, with the AXIS assist system is a spectacular knife. I may be an even bigger fan of the new, smaller Mini Barrage. For me, it all comes down to space, time and place. The Mini Barrage measures in at 7" when open and just barely under 4" when closed. This means that it takes up a whole lot less space in my pocket than a larger knife would. And then there is the whole "Time and Place" argument. I have several very large knives. I like large knives. Some of my favorite knives are big. But I also think there is a time and place for larger knives. The Mini Barrage skirts this whole problem by putting everything I need in a carry knife in a mid size, comfortable package. When you pull out the Mini Barrage, you don't get barraged (I had to do it) with a slew of Crocodile Dundee quotes. Add in the fact that the blade is M390 Super Steel and you have a knife that is not only going to get the job done, it is going to get the job done just right.
M390 is a stainless steel produced by powder metallurgy that gives you a highly homogeneous structure with very fine carbides. It has excellent resistance to wear and tear as well as a high toughness due to the high concentration of vanadium and chromium carbides. The corrosion resistance is excellent due to the high concentration of Chromium. All this fancy talk just means that the steel rocks--it is tough, durable, resistant to corrosion, and keeps an edge. It is everything you want in a steel.
Then you have the most excellent AXIS assist locking system with a safety. Press either of the dual thumb stud actuators and the blade snaps open. Once open, it locks into place with the patented AXIS lock. You can even slide the safety lock on the spine for extra blade security.
This model features a black finished, plain edge blade. The handle has machined aluminum bolsters and black G10 with plenty of texture and shaping for a secure grip. This knife not only performs, it looks great also.
