A quick disclaimer at the beginning of this review--I absolutely love ProTech automatic knives. I think they make some of the very best side open automatic knives in the industry. Their newest addition, The Defiance, is possibly my new most favorite knife. Unlike many dual action knives (they can open manually or automatically) the trigger for the auto open on this knife is very discreet and actually fairly simple to activate. Many double action knives either have a not so subtle button, which in my mind defeats the purpose of a D/A knife, or the activation mechanism is kind of clunky. The Defiance has the trigger mechanism built just below the uppermost part of the G-10 inlay. This top section of the inlay can be depressed slightly which triggers the blade to open. It opens fast and smooth. No glitches, no funky manipulations of your hand to try and activate the trigger, you just push this spot on the handle and the blade comes right out. On the other hand, you can treat the knife like a manual open knife and use the thumb studs on either side of the blade to get the blade open. Your choice, hence the term Dual Action. This auto knife is, like all ProTech knives, very well constructed of top quality materials. The blade is especially interesting. Made of 154-CM Stainless Steel, it has a stone wash finish to it which I really like. Besides all of these features, the knife is about the perfect size knife for every day carry, if that is what you choose. The flat ground blade is a drop point and comes very sharp right out of the box. This is one of my top 3 auto knives of all time. Get one for your collection today!
