Yes. Before the Caly3 (and abbreviation of the name) there was a Calypso2 and Calypso1. No they didn’t fade away or die. They were improved upon, becoming more functional and useful with each rendition. Like comparing the first Corvette to today’s Corvette, the latest Caly3 is an offshoot and tangible testament to the design’s durability and sale-ability in the market. People continue buying the folder because Spyderco held true its original premise: A great folding knife should function and feel like a natural extension of the hand.
The Caly3CFP, with its high-end laminated ZDP-189 blade steel with buffed carbon fiber handle is (yes) yet another variation of the knife that converted legions of knife buyers to the hard-use benefits of flat-ground leaf-shaped blades. ZDP-189 blade steel contains 3% carbon, making it harder, higher on the Rockwell scale and in turn extending the amount of time it stays sharp. The Caly3CFP comes with a PlainEdged that is ground flat for precise cutting. The handle’s shape settles the index finger on the underside and thumb naturally above on the jimped (slip resistant) spine so the knife feels like part of the hand with controlled grip and no forward or backward slide while cutting. Thin is in. We've made our long-favored Cricket model even thinner by integrating the handle and lock. Custom knifemaker Chris Reeve invented the idea of making a linerlock's liner out of backside scale of the handle. In doing this, thickness and bulk are shaved off the handle for an ultra-thin folder that locks up confidently with fewer moving lock parts.

During work hours Chad Los Banos is a Corrections Officer on Hawaii’s Big Island. On his free time he is a hobbyist who practices martial arts and collects knives. In both his job and on his free time he handles knives, lots of them in all shapes and sizes. This motivated him to develop his own knife design he calls the Lava. The Lava’s form follows function approach piqued Spyderco’s interest and a collaborative knife design was the result. The Spyderco/Los Banos Lava has a long curving handle paired with a short blade. The blade’s cutting edge drops downward creating a negative blade angle, a positive feature when holding the knife. The negative angle positions the blade’s cutting edge lower than the user’s index finger so the wrist is in alignment. When the blade and wrist align, you can cut longer with less fatigue and better leverage. Chad’s design philosophy was not to force the hand to fit the knife, but have the knife conform to the hand- any sized hand be it large or small. He kept the blade under two inches and Spyderco manufactures it in VG-10 stainless steel, PlainEdged and flat-ground. The stainless steel handle curves ergonomically with a cutaway finger choil, pronounced enough to seriously wrap a hand around and solidly grip. A backlock with a Boye safety dent, locks the blade open and a steel pocket clip positions the (closed) knife, tip facing upward, in the pocket.

In the Philippine Visayan dialect, the literal translation of the word Pikal means to rip. In the U.S. the term Pikal remains relatively new but a company called Shivworks is making headway in its introduction to the American market. Its English definition is twofold: It is a rising martial arts genre and the name of a Spyderco knife designed to accompany this art form. As a self-defense platform, Pikal is carried out holding a knife in reverse grip with the sharpened edge facing inward toward the user. Pikal’s objective is not flowing drills with your opponent but rapidly and effectively striking and surprising.
The Spyderco C103 P’Kal, offers features specific to this activity but these same features also translate well for everyday carry. The CPM S30V PlainEdge blade curves to a point. When held with the tip facing downward it feels natural and comfortable making pulling, downward cuts.
Protruding from the top of the blade’s spine is a removable Emerson Opening feature. The Spyderco Caspian Salt, Part Serrated fixed blade is one of the top underwater fixed blade knives available. Average water knives are all around but finding one that doesn't rust and stays sharp makes a top notch water knife. This knife is a solid piece of non-rusting H-1 steel and is nitrogen based instead of carbon based. This makes it so it doesn't rust because the nitrogen doesn't interact with the chloride in the water like carbon does. This knife comes with cutouts to lessen the weight of the knife and a round cutout hole to fit a bare or gloved index finger through like a ring. It makes it so it is nearly impossible to drop underwater unless you open your hand. It also frees your fingertips and thumb to do other things. The handle is overlaid with fiberglass reinforced nylon and gives it amazing grip (very important in cold or moving water). It also has two lanyard holse for additional retrieval-cord positioning. The Combination Edged blade has a line cutter set on the top of the blade and a pointed tip.
