Description
The 530 Pardue series of folder knives is one of Benchmade's lightest and one of the slimmest knives they offer--certainly making it the ultimate lightweight carry option. This Blue Class folder utilizes Benchmade's AXIS system which provides fluid action and a rock sold lockup and is opened with the minimized ambidextrous dual thumb stud design. The second variation of this series, the 531 models, incorporates slightly heavier G-10 handle scales in a black and grey herringbone pattern. This specific model, the 531, features a drop point style blade in a satin finish as well as a pocket clip that is designed for tip up carry only but is eligible for left or right hand carry options. Made in the USA.

Benchmade 531 Pardue AXIS Folder Knife

The lightweight Benchmade 531 continues the stellar tradition of the lightweight Pardue folder with the new option of black and grey herringbone pattern G10 handle scales. This popular folder is now available as the 530 series or the new 531 series. This knife design comes from Mel Pardue, who has been making knives for over 25 years. A senior designer at Benchmade, Pardue’s creations are best known for utility, simplicity and class. As Benchmade says, “Less is definitely more with Mel’s designs.”

BLADE

The 3.25” satin finished plain edge blade is 154CM stainless steel. This gives you a mid sized blade that is going to perform admirably under heavy daily use. An American premium grade stainless steel, 154CM is best known for its all around utility. It gives you very high corrosion resistance, good toughness and great edge quality. Many premium knife makers in the industry use 154CM exclusively for their knife blades. Piranha and Pro-Tech knives are two that use 154CM for nearly all of their knives. Originally designed for extremely tough industrial applications, once produced, many knife makers quickly realized how excellent it was for blade steel. Since then, 154CM has become synonomous with high quality knives. This blade is going to keep an edge under heavy daily use, it isn’t going to deform, break or chip, and it is going to resist corrosion.

The blade is a slightly modified drop point. The flat grind will give you excellent slicing, chopping and even good piercing cut ability. I especially like the size of this blade. When combined with the amazing total knife weight of just 2.1 ounces, it is nearly unbelievable what you are carrying in your hands. The blade opens easily and smoothly with the ambidextrous thumb studs.

The blade locks open with the AXIS lock. I cannot say strongly enough how great the AXIS system performs. If you haven’t tried it, you need to get one in your hands to see how great it is. The AXIS system can now be found on manual folders (like the 531) as well as spring assist and automatic knives. Every single one gives you maximal lock up security with no blade movement.

HANDLE

The biggest change between the earlier 530, which is still available should you want it, is the upgrade from Grivory handles to G10. The new G10 handle scales are blck and grey with a herringbone pattern. The textured pattern gives you a solid grip regardless of conditions. Down the length of the handle scales on both edges are multiple grip lines that allow you to easily index your fingers even without looking at the handle. The butt of the handle flares up slightly as does the front of the handle. The butt has a lanyard hole if you choose to use it. It does come with a black, reversible tip up pocket clip. The handle scales also flare slightly at all four “corners” which gives it a tombstone style. On the inside edge there is a slight finger groove which doubles as a resting spot for the ambidextrous thumb studs. This knife is comfortable in the hand and easy to keep a grip on.

OVERALL IMPRESSION

This lightweight is the perfect utility knife for every day carry. If you are looking for slim, extremely lightweight but that still offers you a premium, full size blade, the 531 Pardue AXIS is the perfect choice. It won’t take up much room in your pocket, it is built by Benchmade so it will perform beyond industry standards, and it has premium components which means it will last a lifetime and beyond.
