Description
The Barrage family, designed by Warren Osborne, was the first model to feature Benchmade's patented AXIS assist spring assisted mechanism. Offered in both a full and mini size, this spring assist knife has earned high marks for all around functionality and value. Thanks to the AXIS locking mechanism, you can feel confident that this knife will operate smoothly and have a solid lock up. This Mini-Barrage model, the 586S, comes standard with a two tone black G-10 handle and aluminum bolster, stainless steel liners, integrated spine safety and a drop point blade, that is partly serrated, in a satin finish. The ultra premium Bohler M390 stainless steel blade opens lightning-fast thanks to the integrated thumb studs and the pocket clip is designed for tip up carry only but is eligible for left or right hand carry options. Made in the USA.

Benchmade 586S Mini Barrage Assist Knife
The Benchmade Mini Barrage AXIS Assist knife stands tall among mid size spring assist knives. Built with the high quality components, the Mini Barrage exhibits maximum attention to detail in the construction and assembly.
BLADE
The M390 Super Steel blade is 2.91" long. M390 Super Steel is a high performance powder steel with amazing cutting ability and wear resistance due to the high concentrations of vanadium and chromium. The drop point blade on the 586S sports a combo edge that will allow you to cut through straps and ropes with ease. If you don't expect a lot of rope and strap cutting-you may want to check out the Mini Barrage with a plain (standard) edge. The blade cuts everything I throw at it like the proverbial "hot knife through butter". The blade has absolutely no vertical or horizontal play. Although the blade grind is simple enough to sharpen yourself when the time comes, I prefer to send all my Benchmade knives back to the factory using the Benchmade Life Sharp program. For the cost it is always worth it for me to have a professional sharpen my knife--plus they always check everything else on the knife.
HANDLE
The handle scales are machined black G10 with aluminum bolsters. The silver and black contrast looks great--but even more important is that the handle is comfortable in my hand. All the edges are beveled which eliminates wear and tear on your palm and fingers from sharp corners. I especially like the extra deep finger groove that transitions into a flared out top on the bolster that acts as a sort of quillon to prevent your hand from riding up onto the blade. The spine of the handle is also slightly flared. With the G10 and aluminum there should be no issues with weather and humidity--everything is stable. Water should never cause problems with this handle, just make sure you wipe it down properly if it does get wet.

SAFETY AND FIRE BUTTON
My favorite part of any AXIS Assist knife from Benchmade is the AXIS system. To open the knife, just flick either of the thumb studs and the blade snaps out fast. It locks up nice and solid via the AXIS system. To release the blade, the AXIS slide moves easily back and forth with smooth pressure (it works just as well for a right or left handed user). You just grab the AXIS slide between your forefinger and thumb and pull it toward the base of the handle. This releases the "lock" on the blade and allows you to close the blade. To securely lock the blade in place you just slide the integrated slide safety on the spine. The safety pushes down into the handle slightly and then slides freely to the open or closed position--which then locks the blade in place. The blade can be locked in the closed or the open position. If you have never used the AXIS assist system from Benchmade--I highly recommend trying it out. It is incredible.

OVERALL IMPRESSION
I think the Mini Barrage is one of the best assist knives on the market right now. Perfectly sized for heavy every day use, this knife has it all--super high quality steel, fantastic AXIS assist mechanism and quality components. Throw in the USA made tag and the limited lifetime warranty and you have a winner.
